Your own ebook icon is often a handy little gizmo that constantly keeps your name or logo in front of your customer. There are some generic icons you can use, or you can make your own with a free icon-maker program. Icons are somewhat different to work with than regular graphic files (GIF, JPG, BMP, PNG, etc.) because it usually takes a special icon-creation file to create them, though it can be done in PhotoShop or Paint Shop Pro.
These are tiny pictures (16x16 pixels, 32x32 pixels, etc. - up to 128x128). They usually have a file extension of .ICO ... such as "icon-01.ico". You can buy collections of icons (some are quite expensive) or you can create your own. You will find a large and good list of free icon collections at MaxPower.
Try this link (Icon Creator Software) to see several shareware and a few freeware programs or select from the list below. I have tried some of these programs with varying degrees of success. The biggest problem I ran into was in trying to place the 100 free icons below into the Icon Collector. It wouldn't open them because of a "unsupported resolution" error whatever that means. I suspect the files I tried to open were not square (24x24, for example) and may not fit the standard size requirements. Also, GoldIcon wouldn't open them either, although I created a simple icon in GoldIcon in a matter of seconds.
There is a free Online Icon Creator you may want to check out. For more information, also go to Wikipedia.
